Confiança Ensurance Company

To have the lightness of a line and the finish of a cartoon, with the dynamics of camera movement in a 3D television commercial. This was the challenge proposed by animation director Rodrigo Washington for the Confiança Companhia de Seguros commercial created by Parla Comunicação. The process of production for this commercial was divided into several phases, within a timeframe of thirty days and involved a team of seven people.
The first phase was to create the storyboard and layouts and have them approved by the agency, then to use a pre-visualisation technique, very common in American films with special effects scenes, to define the camera movements and rhythm of the editing for these scenes. This technique allows the idea to be refined as it becomes the narrative and the rhythm of the commercial. It requires minimum effort because during this process only primitive basic geometric shapes like boxes, lines, etc are used.

Final scene
After the finalisation of the pre-visualisation stage the definitive modelling of objects and buildings was done, this was the slowest phase of the commercial because it necessitated modelling a whole city starting from scratch. With the final modelling already integrated to the camera movement and printed, the entire commercial had to be printed frame by frame for the almost 400 illustrations that would compose the cartoon. These later would be scanned and returned to the computer to be coloured and integrated into the 3D scenes with their respective final rendering with several layers already composed in Adobe After Effects. Another phase of this work that deserves mention is the texturisation. In order to reach the appearance of coloured pencils, instead of looking for a realistic finish, the texture of the objects and 3D scenes were produced scanning a sequence of scribbles in black and white that later were coloured and applied to the three-dimensional mesh or wireframe. The final sequence was shot at 15 frames per second to soften the shaking effect caused by the textures simulating coloured pencils.

The result after thirty days of work by our team of animators was a spot that mixes the techniques of cartoon and 3D animation, distinguishing itself in the commercial break and generating great customer recall, as do all the products of Animaholics.
